FORT MCCOY, Wis. — The 7304th Medical Training Support Battalion out of San Antonio has sent observer trainers here in support of Global Medic 2009.

Col. Sharron Lucarelli, the commander of the 7304th MTSB said the unit is here to facilitate what went well and what needs improvement in the participating units training. There are a total of 49 OTs, and of them there are day and night shifts to cover all training exercises here at Global Medic.

The OT's are assigned their positions based on their military operational specialty, which ensures the best training observations for Global Medic. Lucarelli said that there is a good amount of cross-training for the OTs so that each of the OTs may have a chance to see the full scope of the exercise.

"The clinical skills are impressive," said Lucarelli, "we have people who do this everyday in their civilian jobs."

The real training for the units being observed is what has not been included in their everyday job. Communication is a prime example, in that; there is no command element which they have to report to.

There is a higher concentration of deployed soldiers participating in Global Medic this year for the OTs, which provides much more insight and experience. Making use of the insight and experience is Staff Sgt. Tamara Vasquez, an OT with the 7304th MSTB, who was observing soldiers of the 143rd Medical Company here Monday.

The 143rd has conducted over 150 dental cleanings since their arrival said, Staff Sgt. Vasquez. The OT's of the 7304th MSTB cover nine different states and have been to every location hosting Global Medic in the last three years.

Lucarelli said the OT's can suggest changes in training to further help soldiers. This helps incorporate the OT's motto, "Coach, Mentor and Train," any chance they get.
