GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Nov. 14, 2019) – Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) and Public Works Department (PWD) Great Lakes celebrated National American Indian Heritage month with an observance ceremony on Nov. 14 at the Port O’Call on base.
The celebration was organized by Jerry Martin, chair of the Great Lakes Native American Heritage Council, and was emceed by Lt. Sanjay Selvam of PWD.
“I always learn something new at diversity celebrations,” said NSGL Executive Officer Cmdr. Ken Williams. “It’s always good to recognize diversity and the spirit of inclusion.”
President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 as “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations under different names, including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month,” have been issued each year since 1994.
More than 9,000 American Indian Sailors hold nearly every job from naval aviator to deep-sea diver. More than 2,000 American Indian civilians work for the Department of the Navy. Today, there are a total of 566 Federally recognized tribes in the United States.
