Every November, Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) joins in recognizing National Radiologic Technology Week and the work of Radiology Department staff members.

This year's theme for National Radiologic Technology Week was ‘Waves of the Future,’ signifying the discovery of the x-ray on Nov. 8, 1895, and acknowledging radiologic technologists and the vital role they play on the healthcare team.

According to Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Sonnypaul Soriano, NHB x-ray technologist, radiologic technologists’ daily support patient centered care by performing diagnostic imaging procedures.

“Our department’s work is to produce high-quality medical images which is crucial in helping physicians diagnose injuries and treat diseases,” said Soriano.

To round off the ‘Rad Tech Week’ NHB’s Radiology Department held a lunch and voted for the year’s top tech.

“Within Naval Hospital Bremerton we put the tech of the year to a vote within the staff members in the department,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jennifer Benitez. “We actually vote on three different categories; most helpful tech, most improved tech, and tech of the year.”

The votes were cast and tallied to reveal this year’s Tech of the Year to be Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Brayden Petersen.

Petersen, a Fielding, Utah, native, enlisted in the Navy in 2012. He is a Bear River High graduate and achieved his associates degree in general studies at Colombia College.

“I was 22 years old and decided I needed an education and a secure job for myself and my family,” said Petersen. “I was always interested in x-ray and researched what a hospital corpsman did in the Navy. I found out that I could pursue x-ray through Navy Medicine.”

Proud of what he has done in the little time he served, Petersen says he will continue to improve himself as a Sailor.

“I feel a sense of pride and excitement,” said Petersen. “To me it means I have to uphold my attributes that got me to this point while striving to be better.”

This is just another accomplishment to add to his list since arriving to NHB.

“While at NHB I was able to get my registered technologist certification, my associate’s degree, and was meritoriously advanced to second class,” said Petersen.

During his time in the Navy, Petersen has been a phlebotomist, x-ray tech and a clinical instructor. Grateful for his time at NHB, Petersen mentions his favorite assignment since enlisting.

“I enjoyed being in Marine Corps Base Quantico at the John Bradley Clinic working with the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidates School candidates,” said Petersen.

Petersen said he is proud of what he does every day to fulfil the Navy surgeon general’s priority on operational readiness.

“As a member of NHB I can help protect and make ready the health of the fleet, making the Navy's operational force medically ready and deployable,” said Petersen. “I have learned so much in my short time in medicine and I am grateful and also ready to apply the skills I have learned.”

NHB radiologic technologists are responsible for radiation safety and protection, equipment protocols, examination techniques and much more, radiologic technologists embrace their role as compassionate front-line caregivers who also operate state-of-the-art equipment. Their work to produce high-quality medical images is crucial in helping physicians diagnose injuries and treat diseases.

Naval Hospital Bremerton currently supports our beneficiaries with multiple modalities to include: Mammography, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy, and Diagnostic Imaging.
