U.S. Marines with Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Air Wing, assisted at the Girl Scouts of Hawaii STEM Fest at the Pearl Harbor Pacific Aviation Museum on November 2, 2019.
The event encourages Girl Scouts of every age to learn more science, technology, engineering and math in the hopes they become better problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and inspirational leaders.
As part of the event, U.S. Marines from MAG-24 showed off their tactical equipment, to include the new and improved six-wheel drive P-19R Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Vehicle, RQ-20 Small Unmanned Aircraft System with remote sensor, and the AH-1Z/UH-1Y Optimized Helmet Display with associated Flight Survival Gear.
The Girl Scouts were able to explore the gear while talking to the U.S. Marines about leadership and the different jobs they perform while in and out of uniform.
U.S. Marine Capt. Dana P. Valle, pilot, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367, spoke to the girls about her experiences as a pilot and the steps she took to become a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps.
“I think it’s really important for them to see a woman as a Marine and an aviator and understand it is an option for them,” Valle explained.
Overall, the event allowed the U.S. Marines to highlight their skillset and encourage the Girl Scouts to consider a future in the military while also allowing the girls to hear first-hand accounts on leadership.
U.S. Marine Col. Stephen J. Lightfoot, commanding officer, MAG-24 stated the event was, “a great opportunity to positively influence our future female leaders.”
