LAKE COUNTY, Ill. (Nov. 11, 2019) -- Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) Commanding Officer Capt. Ray Leung and NSGL Executive Officer Cmdr. Ken Williams represented the Navy at Veterans Day events in Northbrook, Ill. and Lindenhurst, Ill. on an unusually snowy Veterans Day.
Over 400 veterans, schoolchildren and honored guests attended the Veterans Day ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 791 at Northbrook (Ill.) Junior High School, where Capt. Leung spoke about his experiences as an immigrant from Hong Kong and his subsequent career in the Navy.
Leung said he was an undisciplined kid before the Navy. He gave the students in attendance his advice for a successful life. “There are two ingredients you have to have: Be on time and do what you’re told,” he said.
Williams represented the Navy at the Lindenhurst (Ill.) Veterans Day celebration, held in the Public Works garage near the Lindenhurst Veterans Memorial. About 300 veterans and honored guests were in attendance.
“When the world makes you bitter, whenever you doubt that bravery, decency and self-sacrifice is possible, stop and look to a veteran,” said Williams. “They do not always go around telling stories of their heroism, so it is up to us to ask and to listen, to tell those stories for them and to live those values for which they were prepared to give their lives.”
