New chief counsel returns to AMCOM

REDSTONE ARESENAL, Ala. -- Over a decade ago, Col. Nat Causey wore an Army uniform and practiced law as staff judge advocate for the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

Today, he’s back in a business suit as the command’s new chief counsel, responsible for all legal support to AMCOM’s commanding general, staff and subordinate organizations.

“Accepting the position was a great honor,” said Causey, who retired with 28 years of active duty service in 2013. “I really enjoyed serving AMCOM before and my family and I love the Huntsville area. The offer seemed a perfect next step for my civilian career.”

AMCOM’s Legal Office is part of the U.S. Army Materiel Command’s Legal Center at Redstone Arsenal, which supports not only AMCOM but most of the tenant organizations on the Arsenal. The most common legal work in AMCOM involves acquisitions and contracts, labor and employment law, and investigations, Causey said.

Causey’s military legal career began in 1985. Very early on, as a young captain, he found himself gravitating toward contract law and continued to seek out challenging contract law assignments as he advanced in rank.
His experience also includes assignments as chief attorney for the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army at the Pentagon and as a military professor, teaching contact law to other Soldiers and Civilians at the Judge Advocate General’s School in Charlottesville, Virginia; the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort McNair, Washington, DC. When he retired from active-duty service, Causey was selected for a civilian attorney position with the AMC Office of Command Counsel. He was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in April 2018 while serving as chief counsel for the Army Contracting Command.

Causey assumed the duties of AMCOM Legal Office chief counsel on Oct. 28, with AMCOM’s commanding general as his principal client.

“It’s like coming home again,” Causey said. “Many of the same people I previously worked with are still here -- it was wonderful to walk into a new assignment and see so many smiling, familiar faces. This is a great team of legal experts.”

That feeling of “home” also extends outside the office, said Causey.
Causey grew up in a military family that frequently relocated, so there wasn’t a particular place that he felt like calling his hometown, he explained.

“Until I was assigned to Redstone Arsenal in 2007,” he smiled broadly. “This is the longest we’ve ever stayed in one place. My family and I love it here -- we’ve made it our hometown.”

Causey and his wife Pam, have four adult children and three grandchildren -- he smiles again as he mentions he and Pam have been married for 31 years and two of their children and one of the grandchildren also reside in the Huntsville area. “We are very blessed to be able to live in such a wonderful place,” he said.
