COLCHESTER, Vt.- A friendly gathering in the thousands visited the Vermont Air National Guard on Sunday, October 20th to celebrate Airmen Appreciation Day. The brisk Vermont autumn day was an opportunity for all Airmen to enjoy the day amongst colleagues, friends and family.

During the day’s celebration, the event included a large tent with catered cuisine, local kettle corn and bounce houses for children to enjoy. In addition, an F-35 and Blackhawk aircrafts were on display.

Airmen Appreciation Day comes the day after the 158th Fighter Wing welcomed a long list of distinguished visitors to officially welcome the F-35A Lightning II.

The honorable Gov. Phil Scott, Vermont’s governor noted, “The Air Guard and the F-35 are an essential part in enhancing the vibrancy and vitality of the region and the state. I am proud that Vermont will play such a significant role in the defense of our nation and our community.”

Following Scott’s message U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy took to the podium.

“I think of the F-35 as the next era of air defense. It’s the aircraft of the future, but as a Vermonter, I am proud that Vermonters are leading the way.”

Vermont’s adjutant general, U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Greg Knight delivered a poignant and proud message to the Airmen of the 158th Fighter Wing.

“Of all the people we recognize today, our leaders, our supporters, our community stakeholders, by far the most significant attendees today are our Airmen,” said Knight.

As October’s drill weekend concluded, the event was a dedication to Vermont’s Airmen as the organization embarks on this new and exciting chapter.
