FORT CARSON, Colo. – Distinguished members of the Fort Carson community, Soldiers and invited guests welcomed Brig. Gen. John V. Meyer III, incoming deputy commanding general of 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, during a ceremony at 4th Inf. Div. headquarters at Fort Carson, Colorado, November 4, 2019.

“He has both the operational and strategic experience that we need to prepare our units to fight and win our nation’s calls,” said Maj. Gen. Matthew McFarlane, commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson.
McFarlane presided over the ceremony, where Meyer assumed the responsibility for the division’s training and readiness.

“John is coming to us from the Pentagon, I can assure you that the knowledge and experience he gained while there will be well applied across all spectrum of operations as he serves as the division’s deputy commanding general,” McFarlane said.

Meyer is no stranger to Fort Carson, as he has served in a number of roles at the Mountain Post in the past.

“(My family) and I are excited to join the Colorado Springs and the Fort Carson community, and proud to be part of such a distinguished division,” Meyer said. “This formation and this duty station is one of the most sought out in the Army, and while we are happy to be back in the mountains, the outdoors, the skiing, the close proximity to family in Idaho, we are most impressed with the sincerity and kindness of everyone we have met.”

Meyer, a native of Maryland, previously served as the executive assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He also served as the commander of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and as the commander of 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment.

During the ceremony, McFarlane spoke of Meyer’s long career.

“After a quick glance at John’s resume, you’ll know that he is the right person with the right experience to fulfill our mission here at Fort Carson,” McFarlane said.
McFarlane expressed his excitement to have the Meyer family as part of the Ivy Division, as he welcomed the Meyer family to the division.

“I look forward to your continued efforts to enhance our division readiness and strengthen our Families and communities,” McFarlane said. “This is an incredibly busy, busy division in the Army. From our brigade field training exercises, division warfighter and potential future deployments, John you will certainly remain engaged.”

Meyer is looking forward to assuming his new role within the division.

“We look forward to be a part of the family of the division that continues to defend those values which make our nation’s great,” Meyer said.
