    HNC employees go "Above and Beyond"

    Several members of the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville team were recently recognized for their efforts in helping the organization to meets its mission to provide specialized technical expertise, global engineering solutions, and cutting edge innovations through centrally managed programs in support of national interests.

    Colleen O’Keefe, contracting chief, received the Civilian Service Commendation Medal was commended for “exemplary service” while assuming the temporary role as Huntsville Center’s business director. She is credited with tackling numerous critical activities and leading the Business Directorate to success in achieving $2.23 billion of annual obligations in fiscal year 2019, directly supporting the Warfighter on a global scale.

    A pair of Huntsville Center employees, Moon H. Hemm and Hector Vega, were honored for their work addressing a mission-critical issue with Jet Propellant Thermal fuel tanks at Osan Air Force Base in the Republic of Korea.

    Hemm was awarded the Civilian Service Achievement Medal for her “exemplary service and support to the Warfighter as a project manager for the Recurring Maintenance and Minor Repair program” that solved the Osan AFB challenge.

    Her award credited Hemm as she “oversaw rapidly executed priority repairs, ensuring crucial on-going operations in theater.” Osan AFB supports reconnaissance aircraft that provide “imagery and signals intelligence crucial for command leaders throughout the Korean peninsula,” according to a Huntsville Center article published in March 2019.

    Vega also received the Civilian Service Achievement Medal for work related to the Osan AFB project. As the contracting officer responsible for ensuring that the emergency service orders were approved quickly to avoid disruption of on-going operations, Vega, “went above and beyond to make sure the Warfighter received the best possible support in the shortest amount of time,” according to his citation.

    Project manager Sara D. Cook was honored for service to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ counterpart the South Atlantic Division. She assisted the division in completing contract actions prior to end-of-year fiscal deadlines.

    In a citation signed by Brig. Gen. Dana M. Holland, commander South Atlantic Division, Cook’s “patient advice and meticulous attention to detail facilitated the correct translation of DAD’s requirements…Her quick responses and timely contributions allowed SAD to maximize available funding to meet mission requirements and improve capabilities of the command.”

    David F. Klahn, Jr. was recognized for distinction for his successful completion of the Regional Leadership Development Program with the South Atlantic Division.

    According to a 2016 story about the program, “Graduates developed tools to assist the organization in retaining vital information and knowledge as team members retire or move to new positions. These practical tools provide concrete knowledge management methodology that can be adapted for use by all programs to capture vital institutional memory and facilitate succession of employees.”
