CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Corpus Christi Army Depot met its fiscal year 2019 goal, delivering 30 aircraft.

“Our 3,200-plus workforce did what they do best, providing modification, repair and overhaul services for rotary wing components and aircraft to support Army readiness,” said CCAD Commander Colonel Gail Atkins. “We proudly provided top-notch quality products for our customers.”

From components to bearings to engines, CCAD’s efficiencies impact readiness for the Warfighter.

All aircraft, the UH-60M, UH-60L Black Hawk; HH-60 Pave Hawk; and AH-64 Apache, are flight tested before the final hand to the delivery crew and then to the customer.

And although south Texas averages more sunny days than rainy ones, this year there has been numerous scattered, random showers on the Coastal Bend which effects flyable hours for aircraft.

Despite challenges, CCAD continues to operate like a well-oiled machine with parts needed arriving at the right time and place for each stage of the process.

Jason Schumacher, second shift integrated systems technician, said he loves the challenges. Every day he is faced with a different thing, it is never the same thing over and over again. It’s all about time management, flight time or managing flight time.

The average repair turnaround time was reduced by 34 days, positively impacting aircraft completion.

“All employees throughout the Depot put in so much effort to get it done,” said Aaron Shephard. “Hangar 44 Flight Test is the final stop, the culmination of everything the Depot workforce does on a daily basis. Our workforce is made up of skilled artisans who have honed their skills.”

With Flight Test as the final stop, Jess Avery, a 12-year aircraft mechanic, represents the ground support crew.

The aircraft mechanics conduct maintenance and make adjustments based on the air crew’s feedback.

Avery said it best, “I have a responsibility to the air crew, when they climb in, strap in to go and fly that they return to the ground and go home to their families.”

At the end of the day, it’s all about a safe, quality product getting to the Warfighter.
