WASHINGTON -- U.S. Naval Research Laboratory employees gathered on the campus mall to celebrate the launch of the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) of the National Capital Area with a festive fall event involving live music, food trucks, ice cream, games, and local charities Oct. 17.

The community came together to “show some love” for nonprofit organizations across the D.C. metro area. The campaign is a 58-year federal workplace giving tradition that to date has raised more than $8.3 billion for more than 20,000 nonprofit charitable organizations. As one of the largest workplace giving campaigns in the world, CFC raises funds to support people in need around the corner, across the nation and throughout the world.

“Last year, federal employees had a huge impact on the community through CFC by contributing $93 million to local and international causes through funds and volunteer time,” said Mass Communications Specialist 1st Class John Belanger, NRL’s CFC coordinator.

Gregory Wagner, events and advancement coordinator for Seabury Resources for Aging, said his organization, which connects older adults with affordable services and housing options, was grateful to be featured at NRL’s CFC kickoff. Wagner said he left a job with a for-profit company in order to give back to the D.C. area he fell in love with.

“During CFC we want employees to be aware of our services,” he said. “As we engage with employees, we want to make sure we are able to sustain the resources we need to help thousands of aging adults and their families.”

CFC’s open season kicked off Sept. 9 and will continue through Jan. 12, 2020. NRL employees at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi and Monterey, California locations may coordinate donations with their respective regional CFC campaigns in Mississippi Delta/Gulf Coastal Plains and Northern California.

Belanger suggested people consider donating to nonprofits that support animals in need such as animal shelters.
“Look out for the animals who cannot help themselves and help provide the variety of services they need in order to survive,” he said.

Gloria Evans, a CFC loaned executive for 2019, is no stranger to the efforts of campaigns and charities in the D.C. area. She received help overcoming the hardship of losing her mother at the age of 6. Her experience inspired her to donate to causes that help children in need.

“My family stepped in and took care of us (after) my mother left eight kids to be raised,” Evans said. “I’m very passionate about helping others in my life because someone has helped me. I absolutely love people and love helping.”

Referencing the 2018 federal government shutdown when 380,000 federal workers were forced to take unpaid leave, Evans said anyone could fall on hard times.

“It could be me today, you tomorrow,” she said. “This is why I am extremely passionate about donating and why these charities are so important. It’s time to give back!”
