NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (Oct. 29, 2019) -- As a part of the Fall Festival at Green Bay Early Childhood Center in North Chicago, Ill., Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) Sailors, working alongside North Chicago Community Partners, handed out groceries and participated in family friendly events Oct. 29.
“This type of event allows us as Sailors to give back to the community that is our closest neighbor,” said Damage Controlman 2nd Class Susana Gonyea, NSGL Community Outreach Petty Officer. “This teaches us that no matter what our background or rate is, we, as Sailors, can come together to meet a common goal.”
Gonyea is one of many enlisted Sailors who visit local schools each year.
Also volunteering was NSGL Executive Officer Cmdr. Ken Williams. “It’s great to see our Sailors giving back to the community,” said Williams. “There's nothing better than helping others while putting in a couple of hours of hard work.”
