BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Soldiers of the Army Reserve Sustainment Command took part in an assumption of command ceremony October 20 in Birmingham. During the ceremony, Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Luchsinger, command sergeant major of the ARSC and the custodian of colors, passed the unit’s colors to Maj. Gen. Greg Mosser, commanding general of the 377th Theater Sustainment Command of Belle Chasse, La. and he passed the colors to Brig. Gen. Donald Absher charging him with the responsibility and authority of the ARSC.
Mosser presided over the event which included ARSC’s five brigades with commanders and senior enlisted advisors. The 313th United States Army Band, under the direction of Staff. Sgt. Cory Belvin, provided the brass quintet for the ceremony.
Distinguished guests in attendance were Maj. Gen. (ret.) James Darden, U.S. Army Reserve Ambassador for Alabama; Col. Jeffery Mahan, deputy commanding officer for the Deployment Support Command of Birmingham; Command Sgt. Maj. Annette Brandenberg-Bethany, command sergeant major for the DSC; Col. Joseph Dreksler, chief of staff for the DSC. The special guest in attendance was, Absher’s wife, Linda.
After the ceremonial passing of the colors, Mosser shared with the command what an honor it was to be a part of this event.
“I always enjoy being with Soldiers and welcoming new leaders to our command,” said Mosser to those in attendance.
He thanked Col. Harold Askins for the fabulous job he did as interim commander during the time of transition.
He continued, by giving thanks to Absher’s wife, Linda, for her years of service to the nation and added that her support has been pivotal in Absher’s success.
Mosser expressed his confidence in Absher to care for and lead the ARSC Soldiers.
“The ARSC is a unique organization, and Absher is a strong and adaptable leader and I am confident that he will be a great commander,” he added.
Absher then took the podium and thanked distinguished visitors, family, friends, and Soldiers of the ARSC for making the ceremony so special.
“I am thankful for this opportunity and I recognize that it is a position with tremendous responsibility and I will not let you down,” said Absher.
He took a moment to say a special thank you to his wife, Linda for all her support and caring throughout the past 32 years of his military service.
“I am so deeply appreciative for you, Linda, as I recognize the service and sacrifices you have made through many deployments while you kept the house and our family together,” said Absher.
He also thanked Askins for being such a great advisor during his transition to the ARSC.
“These are exciting times in our world and we certainly have a role to play,” added Absher. “I am excited, honored, and humbled to command the ARSC and continue our mission.”
The ARSC’s mission is to deliver global materiel readiness, contracting, acquisition, and LOGCAP capability in support of the Warfighter through AMC and DCMA in order to sustain land dominance. ARSC Soldiers are deployed around the globe supporting combatant commanders, Army service component commands, Department of Defense and Army agencies and directorates in multiple locations, operations, and exercises.
