SAN DIEGO (NNS) — Sailors and their families participated in Naval Base Point Loma’s first base career fair on Oct. 16 at the Ballast Point Galley.
A career fair is an event in which employers, recruiters, and schools can give information to potential employees.
“I challenge you to discover your own path,” said Capt. Brien Dickson, commanding officer of Naval Base Point Loma. “By networking and building relationships to find your next career.”
The fair’s aim is for Sailors to become better acquainted with local agencies that could one day become their employers.
“It’s truly exciting to see all of you here today taking advantage of this unique opportunity to form partnerships,” said Dickson.
Sailors were able to establish rapport and network throughout the duration of the fair.
Months of preparation went into accommodating the event to both Sailors and guests alike.
“When it comes to a career fair you want to have a target audience,” said Navy Counselor 1st Class Christopher Hirn, command career counselor and organizer of the fair. “I noticed there’s never been one on this base, so I decided to do our own career fair for the audience on this base.”
Putting together an event of this scale requires participation and involvement from all interested parties.
“I started this is June and it grew from there,” said Hirn. “And then more and more agencies started to get involved.”
At the fair, over 20 agencies came out to speak to Sailors. These included U.S. Navy Reserve, U.S. Border Patrol, Pennsylvania State University, U.S. Secret Service, San Diego Gas & Electric, General Dynamics NASSCO, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), The United States Naval Criminal investigative Service (NCIS), and BAE Systems.
“The main focus of this is helping people see other opportunities,” said Hirn. “Opening up other career opportunities to veterans and helping people realize what they qualify for and what steps they need to take to achieve certain career paths in the future.”
It’s important for Sailors to understand what resources are out there for them, whether they decide to move on from the Navy after one enlistment or whether they retire as a Sailor.
Sailors should be as well educated as possible in these matters so they can make future decisions that are most beneficial to them and their families.
“There are positive effects on both sides of this,” said Hirn. “Sailors are gaining the knowledge of pre-requisites and requirements for agencies and on the other hand agencies are gaining awareness on Sailors’ qualifications and what they have to offer.”
The skills that Sailors learn throughout their Naval careers can be translated into other career paths and offer opportunities for Sailors to continue to expand their knowledge.
Events like this one help prepare Sailors for their futures and in making educated decisions in whatever path they choose to go in life.
