Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C. -- Team Seymour’s Fire Department partnered with the National Fire Protection Association and several members of the community in support of Fire Prevention Week Oct 6-12, 2019.
Firefighters from the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron held several events aimed at reinforcing 2019’s theme, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape – Plan and Practice Your Escape!”
According to Eric Harper, 4 CES assistant fire chief, the theme was chosen to educate everyone about the small, but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.
“We live in a world of superheroes,” Harper said. “This year, we felt it was important to show our youngest members if they plan ahead, they too could do heroic things if they find themselves in these circumstances.”
Prior to the start of the week, Col. Donn Yates, 4th Fighter Wing commander, signed a proclamation kicking-off the annual event, which emphasized the wing’s dedication to ensure the fire safety of all members on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
“Fire safety helps everyone,” said Sean Tucker, 4 CES fire inspector. “We want to ensure that everyone is educated enough to save lives and property.”
In order to further emphasize their point, firefighters held educational seminars for the students at Meadow Lane Elementary School. While there, several firefighters dressed in costumes, such as Sparky the Fire Dog, and other famous and recognizable superheroes.
“Imaginations are a great tool for educating,” said Harper. “We felt by dressing as the superheroes, and teaching the youngest members of our community how to plan and execute a fire plan, it would resonate with them.
During the seminar, elementary students also asked questions about fire safety and even joined in on a chant of the theme at the conclusion.
“It’s definitely satisfying to inspire kids to do the right thing,” Harper said. “Hopefully we have given them the tools to avoid terrible situations in the future and to be somebody else’s hero.”
Firefighters also held a puppet show at the Child Development Center on base and handed information out to Airmen as they drove through the front gate in the morning.
“Fire safety affects everyone,” Harper added. “In order to keep everyone safe, we need to ensure that we plan on every level. You are never too old or young to be safe.”
The event concluded with an open house style celebration at Debden Park. Members of the installation enjoyed food, entertainment and fire safety demonstrations.
