Task Force Spartan soldiers met with the Kuwait Disabled Sports Club to discuss a continuing program focused on fostering community relationships, building mutual cultural understanding and creating an open dialogue about daily life.
"We are happy that Task Force Spartan supports disabled people by sharing events with the Kuwait Disabled Sports Club. The soldiers show leadership by offering support and encouragement to fellow athletes," said Vice Chairman Nassir Alajmy.
The Kuwait Disabled Sports Club, founded in 1977, assists with developing sporting programs like the International Paralympic Committee.
Disabled athletes wanting to work out at the facility where people play sitting volleyball, table tennis, wheelchair basketball and many other sports can arrange to be picked up and dropped off by the club.
Several athletes training at the Kuwait Disabled Sports Club have earned medals in Paralympic games, broken world records and met world leaders.
Kuwait athletes brought home eight medals from the West Asia Paralympic Games two weeks ago according to an Arab Times article.
Soldiers visited the club in the past, but Task Force Spartan restructured the team managing community engagements creating a small gap in volunteer opportunities.
"By letting Soldiers interact with everyday citizens, outside the realm of military-to-military engagements, allows us to better understand the people in the areas in which we serve abroad and allows them to experience cultures and build true friendships," said Lt. Col. Steve Slaughter, Task Force Spartan civil affairs officer.
The 38th Infantry Division civil affairs team reinitiated the partnership between the two organizations.
Previous participants played wheelchair basketball to build an understanding of the strength and endurance the sport requires.
"The soldiers sit in the wheelchairs and understand what it takes and how it feels," said Alajmy.
Division soldiers and sports club members look forward to a sustainable relationship for Task Force Spartan rotations to come.
