Q. What is your job during this exercise?
A. Medical Technician/Assistant to Senegalese hospital staff/patients.
Q. How much work have you done so far?
A. Most of my days were spent working alongside our providers and their nursing staff/providers. In conjunction with the ER, most areas were more like internal medicine, so it was a slower process, but you really got involved with the patients and their care. I spent so much time in the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as well and watched the staff educate the new moms on breast feeding and different ways to help baby eat if mom isn't producing anything.
Q. What is the most exciting thing you have done so far in Senegal?
A. I walked through the markets, watched a live birth, watched our Guard members successfully save newborn lives.
Q. What was your day like in Senegal?
A. Main process was rounding in pediatrics every morning with the residents. Each patient got an adequate amount of time spent with the providers and nursing staff, morning labs/vitals were taken on almost everyone, and checking in on the NICU babies. In the afternoon, I typically went to the ER or maternity to see what was going on in those departments and see if I could assist or learn in anyway.
Q. What has made the biggest impact on you during this mission?
A. There one time in the NICU, I watched a team attempt to resuscitate a little baby for over an hour until he crashed and there was nothing more they could do. But in maternity one day, one of the women who just had a baby was looking for her baby and we brought him in and the family joined the mom and they were smiling and laughing and taking pictures, it felt amazing to see that there was some emotion and affection here.
Q. How is this mission making you a better medical professional?
A. It's giving me a better understanding of a totally different culture, way of living and truly making the most of what little you are provided with.
Q. Anything else you want to add?
A. it was amazing! I really can't wait to visit more areas in Senegal.
