FORT CARSON, Colo. – The 10th Field Hospital, 627th Hospital Center, held their first family day in the field, Sept. 22. The event was set up to allow Soldiers of the medical unit and their families to see each other after weeks of training.

“We’ve been out here for three weeks and we miss our families,” said Sgt. 1st Class Michael Kelsey, the chief ward master assigned to the 193 Hospital Augmentation Detachment (Intermediate Care Ward), 10 FH, 627 HC. “It’s a great opportunity for families to come out.”

Family members visited their Soldiers to get insight on how they live and what they do while in the field. They were able to take a tour of the facility while being able to spend time with their loved ones.

Children were encouraged by the staff of the field hospital to bring in their favorite stuffed animal, which would be “operated on” by the medical professionals.

The toys received x-rays, splints and bandages to heal their wounds and broken bones, much at the awe of the children. Such inclusive events helped the families see the hard work that their Soldiers do in the field.
“It was really cool for the kids to see,” said Capt. Mandy Smith, an emergency room nurse with the 10 FH, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 627 HC. “It was nice for the organizers to think to do that because they knew that kids would be here.”

The visiting families learned that the combined 37 tents that made up the field hospital were used to train the medical personnel how to properly treat wounded Soldiers while working downrange. This is the first time in two and a half years that this kind of deployment training has been implemented.

The 148-bed hospital displayed many different areas of operation to tour through, including dental surgery, a blood bank, a pharmacy and an intensive care unit.

By utilizing these facilities, the medical staff were able to practice surgery on Soldiers while out in the field, which contributes to the overall combat readiness of the team.

“We’ve come a long way,” said Spc. Lee Kintchen, a dental technician for the 534th Hospital Augmentation Detachment (Surgical Unit), 10 FH, 627 HC. “We’ve got hot showers, breakfast and dinner, heat and electricity. You can get just about any service here that you would at a normal hospital.”
