KIRTLAND AIR FOCE BASE, N.M.--There’s a small number of Airmen tucked away behind locked doors that are keeping track of everything that’s going on at Kirtland Air Force Base 24-hours a day.
This group of Airmen make up the 377th Air Base Wing Command Post. Which is responsible for maintaining a responsive and reliable 24-hour command and control system, linking higher command and control centers with local senior leaders, local operational and support agencies, and the base populace.
“We kind of feel like the commander’s ninjas,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Rhiannon Morris, 377th ABW Command Post Command and Control operator. “We do a lot for the base, like ensure that the different organizations are connected to each other even if they are located on opposite sides of the base.”
Most may know the command post for AtHoc and giant voice notifications, but that is just a small part of the day-to-day mission of the CP.
“Responding to any and all emergency notifications from the Base Defense Operations Center and the Fire Department, and keeping open communications with Air Force Global Strike Command and Air Force Service Watch for the purpose of operational reporting,” said Marcus Burnett, 377th ABW Command Post Command and Control Operations chief. “A ‘good day’ is when the CP isn’t busy. If we are busy, then that usually means something has gone wrong.”
If something has gone wrong, the controllers in the CP quickly jump into action, according to Morris.
“It’s satisfying to know my fellow controllers and how quickly we work together to keep information going to the rest of base,” said Morris.
This team work is one of the reasons the 377th ABW Command Post was named the Headquarters Air Force Large Command Post of the Year for 2018.
“It is a tremendous honor,” Burnett said. “We achieved many successes during 2018 with a significant manning shortfall of over 40%. We are humbled to be recognized by our peers in the career field.”
That recognition is all about the hard work of the Airmen in the CP, according to U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Angeline Mahoney, 377th ABW Command Post Command and Control Operations superintendent.
“We have a superb group of Airmen in the CP. With the manning shortfall, all took on additional duties and responsibilities to ensure mission success. We are a small close knit family,” said Mahoney.
