MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. – Being in the military is more than putting on the uniform every day. It is about building partnerships, helping others and continually working on professional growth outside of the line of duty. Airmen not only represent themselves, but also the entire military community.

On behalf of the W program, Darryl Kelly, who is on the Board of W Trustees, will be visiting locations across Wichita to gain insight on how the community wants to see the riverfront utilized. The Riverfront Legacy Listening Tour was held at McConnell on Oct. 2, 2019. Airmen from across the installation attended and had the opportunity to have their ideas heard by Kelly.

“You’ll only wear this uniform for so long, and then it will be time to step into the civilian workforce,” said Kelly. “It’s important for military to understand that their job translates...While you’re in [the military], you’re going to be the most mission-ready person you can be, but we’re going to help make you marketable for when you separate.”

The W is a program ran by the Chamber of Commerce program for young professionals from across the community to give their thoughts and ideas on improving the city of Wichita.

“Engaging with the community allows Airmen to [use] their training and skills to help make the community they are stationed at a better place,” said 1st Lt. Jordan Lambert, 22nd Operations Support Squadron deputy chief operations group mobility and member of W. “W provides a platform for Airmen and other young professionals to get involved and lead.”
