As the First Sergeant for the 392nd Intelligence Squadron, U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Tina Timmerman works with her Squadron Commander and Squadron Superintendent to ensure the health, welfare, morale of the Airmen assigned.

Recently, Timmerman won the First Sergeant of the Year award at the 25th Air Force level. This award recognizes the important contributions and leadership qualities exhibited by Air Force members in the First Sergeant career field.

“I was completely shocked and humbled,” said Timmerman. “I work with outstanding First Sergeants and I know they are as dedicated to their Airmen as I am to mine. It is appreciated. I never did an action for an Airman thinking it would turn into a bullet for an award package, it was done because that is what my Airman needed that day.“

The ability to help, mentor and influence the development of the enlisted and officer corps inspired her to become a First Sergeant but the Airmen inspire her every day.

“The Airmen I work for and with are my inspiration,” said Timmerman. “The Airmen work in exciting missions and I'm always in awe of what they think of or the new ways they came up with for executing a task. My fellow First Sergeants keep me on my toes as well; they are an amazing group of men and women and I strive to keep up with them. I have never had a more rewarding and challenging job at the same time before.”

Timmerman’s role as a First Sergeant helps to ensure the 392nd IS successfully takes care of their Airmen and accomplish their mission.

“SMSgt Timmerman takes care of Airman issues before the issues turn into something that will warrant commander-level attention,” said U.S. Air Force Lt Col Steven Napier, 392nd IS Commander. “Our unit works in 16 diverse mission areas of both Air Force and National operations, and our Airmen operate at 6 different locations on Oahu, requiring large amounts of travel time to make that face to face contact with every member in the unit. Without her direct contact, the Airmen's well-being would suffer, which would certainly have a negative impact on our mission accomplishment.”

Some of the key accomplishments included coordinating the attendance of 12 allied nation E-9s that sat alongside 96 active duty members for an information exchange. She also resolved a COLA issue identified for her dorm airmen that allowed the airmen to receive back pay and ensured future Airmen in-processing will not have that issue. Additionally, with being co-located with the Pacific Air Forces Headquarters, she works with the Hawaii First Sergeant Council to reach out to our partners in the Pacific Area of Responsibility. She also dedicates her time to on and off base functions that benefit the Airmen, PACAF, and ACC, all while being a supportive wife to an Army E-9 select and attending Army functions with him and being involved his career.

“There is a small amount of chaos that happens in a First Sergeant’s day, and I like that each day is slightly different than the day before,” Timmerman added. “One day it could be finance and dorm issues and the next I’m congratulating an Airman on their accomplishment or helping an Airman with an emergency leave. Each day is different but the common thread is each action done is in support of the Airmen I work for.”

“Remember the person in each situation because there is never a cookie cutter answer,” said SMSgt Timmerman. “More than likely there is a deeper root cause for the situation and it is up to you as the First Sergeant to help figure it out.”

The hard work that Timmerman accomplishes each and every day for her Airmen is what her leadership wanted recognized.

“To win at the Wing and Numbered Air Force level is a tremendous accomplishment for SMSgt Timmerman,” said Napier. “What I see every day that made her so deserving of recognition is her tireless, unwavering dedication to Airmen and mission accomplishment, and not just those of the 392nd IS or 692nd Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, but to all Airmen here on Hickam. I'm proud of her accomplishments, and was ecstatic when we found out she had won First Sergeant of the Year at the 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing and 25th AF.”

SMSgt Timmerman recognizes that this accomplishment was not achieved alone but with the help and support of her fellow servicemen and family.

“I want to thank my husband and my family for strength and support they provide each day,” said SMSgt Timmerman. “I would also like to give a huge shout out to the men and women of the 392nd IS and 692nd ISRG. I don't do this job alone, it is with them I find myself each day and it is an amazing journey! Without them this opportunity would not have happened.”
