Buffalo, NY – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District has awarded a $3.4 million contract to repair a severely degraded 111 year old section of the east pier located in Rochester, New York.

The contract was awarded to Dean Marine and Excavating, Inc., based in Mount Clemens, Michigan, on September 19, 2019. The contractor can begin work in June 2020 with completion expected in September 2020. The repair includes 600 feet of steel sheet pile and a new concrete cap. The pier will be closed during construction, but is not expected to impact navigation during repairs.

“I’ve reached out to the U.S. Coast Guard, local businesses, residents, and angler groups to notify them on the construction timeframe, closure of the pier, and expected increased noise level during construction,” said Lex Barker, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District project manager. “It’s been great to hear positive feedback regarding the project along with appreciation for the early outreach effort.”

The pier repair will allow for safer passage for commercial and recreational traffic, while also serving as a means to dissipate wave action in Rochester Harbor.

“Buffalo District is proud to be able to contribute to the safety of Rochester Harbor through this repair of the east pier,” said Lt. Col. Jason Toth, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District commander. “We are thankful for all of the advocacy and support we receive from Senator Gillibrand, Senator Schumer, and Rep. Morelle to continue assisting with these projects and taking care of the American people.”

Rochester Harbor is a deep draft commercial harbor interconnected with 7 commercial ports, supporting more than 100,000 tons annually. It is home to 1,034 recreational slips, 5 boat launches, and 26 charter boats. It generates recreational economic benefits totaling $10M and supports approximately 140 jobs. Major stakeholders include the Rochester-Monroe County Port Authority, Port of Rochester, U.S. Coast Guard, and Essroc Cement Corporation.

“Rochester’s waterfront is one of our greatest economic and community assets,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “I am grateful to the US Army Corps of Engineers for their support to ensure the safety of our pier so that Rochester can continue to leverage the benefits of our Harbor for years to come.”

Approximately 420 additional feet needs repair after this contract is completed.
