The Non Commissioned Officer is the backbone of the Army, and to maintain the overall success and knowledge base of the senior NCO corps, the 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command held a Senior NCO Leadership Huddle Sept. 18-20, in Whitehall, Ohio.
The intent of the huddle was to gather the senior NCOs from across the command to discuss challenges, best practices and develop a common operating picture to set quantifiable goals for the new fiscal year.
“Attendees should find some of the best value in forming relationships and sharing information on problems and challenges that are common across the command,” said 310th ESC Command Sgt. Maj. Keith Gwin. “They will also hear directly from members of the 310th ESC primary staff and gain tools and resources that can assist them in the execution of their duties.”
The curriculum was extensive throughout the course and provided detail on a multitude of subjects.
“Everything we do here has been focused on how we as NCOs need to attack individual and unit readiness,” stated Gwin. “We are covering in great detail the priorities of the Army Reserve and the 377th Theater Sustainment Command’s focus areas, to include; enlisted promotions, development of the enlisted force, budget planning, property accountability, Inspector General, recruiting and retention initiatives.”
Sometimes the daily requirements can slow down even the best of leaders and a simple gathering of peers can provide the spark needed to tackle each task.
“This huddle gave me the extra motivational push to get things done and make thing happen,” Stated 1ST Sgt. Donald Weston with the 454th Transportation Company. Things will not get easier and we will always have more on our plate, but with the resources gained here today, we will make that happen.”
With constant unknowns in the world today, unit and individual readiness is on the mind of every leader within the Army Reserve.
“To achieve lethality and readiness we must empower company First Sergeants and be part of their fix it plan so they can do their jobs,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Carrie Cieslak with the 38th Regional Support Group. “Soldiers want to be ready and they want to be lethal, the more tools and resources we give first line leaders to execute, will have Soldiers ready for whatever the next job may be.”
The huddle concluded with attendees emailing feedback on the course and course content.
“We have had many positive comments from Soldiers and the staff,” said Gwin. This was our first meeting of this type during my tenure, but with the current success we already have plans in motion for next year.”
