Five Sailors assigned to Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) were advanced to the rank of chief petty officer during a pinning ceremony Sept. 13, 2019.

Four - Chief Hospital Corpsman Annel Eustaquio, Chief Hospital Corpsman Dawn Dillow, Chief Hospital Corpsman Shawn Stone, and Chief Hospital Corpsman Danny Williams were pinned at the hospital, with Chief Hospital Corpsman Piotor Juchniewicz pinned while deployed to Iraq.

“One of our own is forward-deployed doing the work of our country, in harm’s way, taking the skills and leadership into a hostile fire zone to make an impact as an independent duty corpsman,” said NHB’s Command Master Chief Robert Stockton.

During the last six weeks the new chiefs went through a rigorous process where they were taught leadership and team building skills, along with furthering enhancing their knowledge of naval heritage and history, as well as participating in overlapping training exercises focused on core values of honor, courage, and commitment, and bolstering the established unity within the Chiefs Mess.

According to Capt. Shannon Johnson, NHB commanding officer, upholding skills learned by the newly appointed chiefs and developing and enforcing standards is one of many challenges to come.

“Now, you may think the last six weeks were challenging and that the hardest part is over, but the reality is that the true challenge and hard work starts today,” said Johnson. “From this day forward, our Sailors will be watching you and you will be expected to know what the priorities are and to set the tone.”

The new chiefs join NHB’s Chief Mess with a message that they are never alone in their new position as Navy chiefs.

“You are never alone in this and if you ever feel that way, something isn’t right,” said Stockton. “We may not always agree, but trust is the foundation we build our professional relationship on To carry the weight of the responsibility you now assume, your foundation must be strong.”

The rank of chief petty officer was established on April 1, 1893 and these five newly pinned chiefs joined the ranks of their proven and long history.
