GREAT LAKES, Ill. (September 7, 2019) – Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) hosted an Ombudsman Appreciation Dinner at the Port O’Call Sept. 7 to recognize the contributions of Navy ombudsmen throughout the installation.

The dinner brought together NSGL’s ombudsmen, their spouses, commanding officers and command master chiefs for a special ceremony to acknowledge the hard work of ombudsmen for their commands.

“It’s certainly a great honor to be with you this evening,” said Capt. Ray Leung, NSGL commanding officer. “I’ve been fortunate to work with so many wonderful ombudsmen throughout my career. I can speak from personal experience. You effect the spirit and the wellness of the entire Navy family.”

Ombudsmen serve as the primary source of information for a command’s families. They volunteer for this role and are not paid.

“You guys do a lot of things… using the resources and training that you have to solve problems of a lot of Sailors,” said Leung. “Just for that, I want to thank you all for your efforts.”

“We’ll never know how much you accomplish during the week,” said NSGL Command Master Chief Sam Robinson. “We notice your hard work because we have fewer problems because of it.”

About 65 Sailors and ombudsmen were in attendance at the event. Navy Band Great Lakes provided musical accompaniment. Training Support Center Great Lakes provided the color guard.

“I think it was a huge success,” said Rachael Nitz, Work and Family Life Consultant and Ombudsman Coordinator at the Great Lakes Fleet and Family Support Center. “This was the biggest attendance we have had in the last few years and everyone enjoyed their time at the dinner. We had 87 percent of our local ombudsmen in attendance, which is saying a lot.

“I saw nothing but smiles on all of our ombudsmen’s faces and, to me, that was the whole point of the night. These ladies work so hard to keep our families support while our Sailors are out doing their jobs and they deserve so much more than I was able to organize for them,” said Nitz. “I am so proud of how the entire night went!”

Ombudsmen Jenni DeNicola and Carissa Petrillo helped Leung cut the ceremonial cake for the dinner. DeNicola is the ombudsman chairperson, ombudsman for Surface Warfare Officers School Unit, Great Lakes and NSGL. Petrillo is one of the Ombudsmen from Recruit Training Command. DeNicola is the ombudsman with the most time as an ombudsmen and Petrillo is the newest ombudsmen.

Opened in 1911, NSGL is the Navy’s largest training installation and the home of the Navy’s only boot camp. Located on over 1,600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, the installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. NSGL supports over 50 tenant commands and elements as well as over 20,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and DoD civilians who live and work on the installation.
