Sailors assigned to Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR) volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in the Kempsville neighborhood Aug. 27.

Sailors worked to organize furniture, cabinetry, household fixtures, other products, and clean the ReStore.

According to the website, Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads operates two retail stores, one in Norfolk and one in Virginia Beach. Our ReStores are home improvement stores that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, building materials and housewares to the public. The ReStores exist solely to expand the mission of our affiliate to build affordable homes that strengthen families and communities. We also divert tons of usable materials from local landfills while providing an affordable source of home improvement materials for those who want to support the Habitat mission.

"The majority of the items in the store are donated," said Paula Mullen, Va. Beach Habitat for Humanity ReStore Manager. "I’d like to thank the Training Support Center Hampton Roads Military for volunteering. They did such a great job, organizing, cleaning, and interacting with our customers. They were absolutely wonderful. I’d especially like to thank them for their service to our great country.”

"I have never done community relations events before and it was such a good feeling, I’d do it again,” said Fire Controlman 3rd Class Austin Hirsch. “I liked it so much I’m driving to Florida to drop off emergency supplies in the case that Hurricane Dorian hits. I have friends and family in New Smyrna, and they sent me a photo of bare shelves in local stores and it’s the least I can do.”

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization whose vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Lt. Jg. Ryan Davis, TSCHR Chaplain and Religious Program Specialist 2nd Class Oluwadamilola Adeyemi organized the event and they plan to continue their work at the ReStore by volunteering every other week.

“It’s a great feeling helping out and giving back to the community,” said Adeyemi.
