DARWIN, NT, Australia – U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Brian Record proposed to his Australian girlfriend, Melissa Tamblyn on August 17 in Darwin.
Record, a maintenance controller with the Aviation Combat Element, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, has been deployed to Australia three times with MRF-D. He met his wife-to-be at a local restaurant during his first rotation in 2016.
This rotation will be noted as his most memorable yet, as he not only got engaged, he also completed additional training to co-pilot the UH-1Y Venom that he flew in on to propose during the Darwin Military Museum Community Day.
“It did take a bit of work in order for me to have some time in the pilot seat. I needed to do some training and tests to make sure I’m qualified. As a maintainer, I’m familiar with the maintenance side of things, not so much with the flight side,” said the Ocala, Florida native.
Record was excited about his special proposal, but also nervous due to the leap of faith he was taking.
All the hard work done by him and his counterparts to make it happen paid off when his fiancée said yes to his proposal.
When asked about the wedding, Record responded, “We haven’t even been able to pin down a date yet, but are liking the idea of doing it in Hawaii. It will be a bit of a destination wedding, but who doesn’t want to go to Hawaii!”
