KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces conducted an operation in Khost province late May 18 to locate a Haqqani network leader responsible for rocket attacks and the smuggling of weapons, suicide bombers and foreign fighters into eastern Afghanistan.

A combined force patrolled to a village in Tani District, Khost province, approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Khost City, to hunt for the leader who was believed to be in the area. Forces detained one man for further questioning but did not capture the wanted militant.

During the operation, forces learned one of the children of the man had an illness that required medical attention. A coalition officer provided the child's mother funds to facilitate this care and instructed her to seek medical attention for the child.

Siraj Haqqani, the primary threat to security in eastern Afghanistan, directs indiscriminate attacks against the people of Afghanistan from a safe haven in Pakistan. His operatives use brutal tactics such as suicide bombings to destabilize the region and harm the innocent civilians of Paktika, Paktya and Khost.

"Afghan and coalition forces are committed to the welfare of Afghan citizens, and remain determined to hunt down the enemies of the Afghan people," said a U.S. Forces-Afghanistan spokesperson. "With the cooperation of Afghan citizens, we will continue to partner efforts to dissolve terrorist networks that threaten the Afghan people."
