FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa.-Pennsylvania National Guard Soldiers and Airmen assisted residents of U.S. Army Carlisle Barracks by supplying potable water Aug. 5 during the installation's water ban.
The Soldiers and Airmen sanitized, filled, and delivered several M149 water trailers to the post. The trailers have 400-gallon stainless steel tanks and are used to supply water to Soldiers in the field or while in conditions where running water is limited or unavailable. They are also known as 'water buffaloes'.
"We're always here to help our partners and vice versa," said Brig. Gen. David Wood, director of the Pennsylvania National Guard's joint staff. "They are our brothers and sisters in arms and we were happy to assist them-just like they support us."
Officials at Carlisle Barracks noted equipment registered an abnormal reading Sunday Aug. 4 and acting on the recommendation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection promptly issued a “Do Not Use” order for its water. Officials at Carlisle Barracks responded rapidly to the suspected issue and set-up a water distribution point at the commissary and other locations. The Pennsylvania National Guard's water buffaloes were located outside of Root Hall.
Extensive retesting resulted in negative results and the ban was lifted Aug. 6.
Carlisle Barracks is continuing to investigate what caused their Fire Department's equipment to register a reading on Aug. 5 and will provide updates to its residents as the investigation continues.
“I have great confidence in our first responders’ skill and abilities,” said Garrison Commander Lt. Col. Courtney Short. “They did everything they should to take the proper precautions to safeguard our community. Many thanks to the Pennsylvania Guard for assisting our first responders with this issue."
Supporting units were the Pennsylvania Air National Guard's 201st RED HORSE Squadron, 193rd Special Operations Wing and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard's 337th Engineer Company, 55th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade and 108th Field Artillery Battalion, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Both Army units are assigned to the 28th Infantry Division.
