The F-35 Lightning II, a fifth-generation fighter jet, is one of the newest aircraft in the U.S. military. To become familiar with the F-35, pilots use simulators. One of these simulators, made for the general public, was at the 2019 Sioux Falls Air Show at Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Its takes years of training for pilots to learn the skills needed to fly a fighter jet. As the technology in aircraft advances and newer planes are manufactured, simulators are integral for training pilots. Simulators can also allow an average person a taste of what it’s like to fly.
“It's great because you can do anything in the simulator that you can do in the real jet,” said Robert Paul, Lockheed’s operational analysis.
South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken, and others got a chance to try it out and were surprised by the F-35’s capabilities.
“My level of respect for pilots and all the manufacturers that have to consider and run through in mind while they're flying is pretty incredible,” said TenHaken
The F-35 simulator showed the jet’s new and unique technology such as cameras and automated systems to help pilots.
“It was a really unique to see this type of technology and how advanced the system is,” Noem said. "The technology is unlike anything I've ever experienced before."
