Soldiers and civilians assigned to Dental Health Activity-Fort Carson gathered Aug. 7, 2019, at Founders Field to welcome their new commander to the Mountain Post.
Col. Robert J. Selders Jr. assumed command of the unit during a change of command ceremony complete with the Fort Carson Mounted Color Guard and the 4th Infantry Division Band. He replaces Col. Rodney H. Jones.
The ceremony was presided over by Col. Rafael Caraballo, Dental Health Command-Central commander. Caraballo praised the unit and Jones for outstanding success in keeping Fort Carson and 4ID Soldiers medically ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.
Fort Carson DENTAC set dental readiness record highs for the installation and 4ID under Jones’ leadership. Selders plans to expand on the unit’s success during his tenure.
“My main goal always is to maintain a safe working environment for Soldiers receiving care and the healthcare staff providing the care,” said Selders. “Beyond that, I hope to raise the efficiency of the DENTAC and maintain the already strong dental readiness of the 4th Infantry Division.”
Selders is a periodontist who recently commanded Dental Health Activity at Fort Stewart, Georgia, and served as the preventive dentistry consultant for the Southern Regional Dental Command.
“My time at Fort Stewart was rich in experiences with the 3rd Infantry Division and I look forward to equal or greater opportunities with the 4th Infantry Division. From the Rock of the Marne to the Ivy Division, I am a fortunate officer.”
The Fort Carson DENTAC mission encompasses four dental clinics, over 180 military and civilian dental professionals, and a mission of maintaining dental readiness of over 22,000 service members.
While this mission is important for unit readiness at Fort Carson, the effect dental care has on Soldiers is seen in their increased self-confidence.
“Be the one who helps each patient seen in our Fort Carson dental clinics have a positive experience and each coworker to find a ray of sunshine each day,” said Jones. “You never know when your importance can change a person’s life, permanently for the better.”
Jones thanked his team and the military medical community for their support in making Fort Carson DENTAC an example of excellence throughout U.S. Army Dental Health Command.
Jones, who began his active-duty dental officer career in 1994, will take command of Dental Health Command-Pacific at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii next month.
