Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota’s post office installed new intelligent lockers to provide an easy-to-use system for delivery of United States Parcel Service (USPS) packages.
The lockers were installed in late June and became fully operational, July 3, 2019.
“These lockers will simplify back-room operations for post office personnel and the pick-up experience for customers by offering 24/7 package pick-up capability,” said Cmdr. Patrick Brown, NAVSTA Rota’s supply officer. “They provide enhanced security by capturing a photo and signature of the person who picks up the package.”
Customers will receive a PIN code and barcode that can be scanned on their smart phone via the email address provided to the post office upon check-in. The customer can then use the barcode to retrieve their packages at their convenience.
“This especially benefits our customers who have time constraints that limit their ability to get to the post office during regular hours,” said Brown.
The service is meant to augment package pick-up at the service window, which means that not all packages will be delivered via the intelligent lockers. It depends on availability, size of the package and whether it is accountable mail or not, as in, it requires the addressee’s signature upon receipt.
“If the email notification received has the Pitney Bowes logo, that is how the customer will know that their package is in a locker,” said Brown. “If there is no Pitney Bowes logo in the email notification, customers will pick up their package as normal at the window.”
Every customer who has checked in for a regular box at the post office has their email on record where they will receive the notification. When a package arrives at the post office, there is a chance that it will be deposited in the intelligent lockers, giving the customer that extra quality of life convenience. After three notifications, up to 15 days from when the package arrived, it will be transferred to the regular box and be available for pick up at the window during normal business hours.
“For personnel living on or off base, we owe it to them as our customers to offer the latest and greatest products that are on the market,” said Brown. This technology not only enhances the lives of customers whose packages are delivered to the lockers, but it will also reduce the lines for those who have packages required to be picked up at the window.”
Installing the intelligent lockers is yet another example that reflects NAVSTA Rota’s post office personnel’s commitment to provide the best service possible to their customers.
