A capacity-filled room of both men and women Veterans was in attendance for the first Women Veterans Enrichment Seminar, July 24 at the Greenville Community-Based Outpatient Clinic.
The seminar was designed to provide women Veterans information about the growing services they can receive once registered, according to Rose Hutson, Women Veterans Program Manager for the Columbia VA Health Care System.
“We want to extend our outreach even further to women Veterans, but men are just as welcome to get the information as they may need to share with their female Veteran family members and friends,” Hutson said.
Information was available about services offered from various staff of the Columbia VAHCS, such as the Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks Act, also known as the MISSION Act; VA eligibility and enrollment; transportation and more.
Transplanted Californian and Army Veteran, Rita Cossio, stated she really enjoyed the seminar, appreciated the information and the care she gets at the Greenville CBOC and the entire community.
“This area is very Veteran-friendly,” Cossio said. “The Veterans and staff and the people in Greenville are not judgmental. I’ve been here for three years, after visiting here during an R & R when I was in Iraq. When I retired, I came here and I have nothing but praises for my clinic and the staff. They notify me by phone and email and stay on top of my care. I don’t know why everyone doesn’t use the VA, especially this one.”
Cossio added, “The southern hospitality begins right here in Greenville and at this clinic.”
According to Hutson, the intent is to make this a bi-annual event for the Greenville community, with the next update scheduled for a date in December 2019.
