Airmen from Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico; Cannon AFB, N.M., and Kirtland AFB, N.M., competed in Battle of the Bases at the racetrack in Ruidoso, N.M.
The competition is the first event in years that has brought the three bases together.
“This is a great opportunity to interact with the other bases in a competitive environment,” said Chief Master Sgt. Sarah Esparza, 49th Wing command chief. “There was a lot of teamwork and coordination from New Mexico’s Air Force bases and the residents in Ruidoso. We’re thankful for the opportunity to represent Holloman.”
The competitions consisted of pushups, sit-ups, an obstacle course relay, 100-yard sprint and a one-mile race relay. The final competition, tug-of-war, determined the winner. The judges scored each competition from first to third place. First place winners received three points, second place received two points and third place received one point.
Holloman AFB and Cannon AFB made the finals with 30 and 17 points respectively. In the final seconds of tug-of-war Cannon gave a couple good tugs and beat Holloman.
While Cannon received the traveling trophy, many of the competitors and spectators enjoyed the opportunity to come out and watch the events unfold.
“Overall, I thought this was a fun experience,” said Airman 1st Class Jose Winton, Battle of the Bases team lead. “It really showed (camaraderie) with all of us working together and having a good time. Go Holloman!”
Ruidoso Downs hopes to continue this challenge annually.
