Hometown: Rochester, New York
Job title: Cyber Operations Specialist (Military Occupational Specialty 17C)
Unit: U.S. Army Cyber Protection Brigade Development Group, Fort George G. Meade, Md.
QUICK SKETCH:
-- Tool Developer Qualification Course (TDQC) Honor Graduate for 2019. TDQC is a nine-month training program designed to train students with little or no experience in writing software to write software and create capabilities that support the Army cyber mission, taught by instructors from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
-- Originally enlisted as a satellite Communication System Operator-Maintainer (MOS 25S)
-- In his junior year at Dakota State University, where he is pursuing an associate’s degree in Network Infrastructure Security
ON WHY HE ATTENDED THE TOOL DEVELOPER QUALIFICATION COURSE:
“To better my experiences to prepare myself for a work role in cyber that’s going to be a little more stringent on learning and provide a competitive edge to combat our adversaries. It makes it more challenging to find a programmatic way of finding issues rather than doing it manually. TDQC gives me a basic framework on how to do things properly, so I’m not writing poor code that can be an attack vector or exploited, so I’m not opening other avenues while looking for avenues that were already available.”
ON WHAT HE WOULD TELL OTHERS CONSIDERING ATTENDING THE TOOL DEVELOPER QUALIFICATION COURSE:
“TDQC is a great opportunity for enlisted Soldiers, because it gives those of us with degrees or want to get degrees to be at a higher spectrum in education. It’s also an opportunity to push ourselves, intellectually … rather than always doing things by the book, by SOP (standard operating procedures).”
ON HIS SHORT- AND LONG-TERM GOALS:
“In the short term, it’s to finish my associate’s, … which I’ll have by the end of the year, and then I want to finish my bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, and in turn my master’s degree. I have a great foundation to build upon and continue to grow, as it is forever a learning experience.”
