Both civilian and Soldier feedback is needed to help create the best possible workplace at Fort McCoy.

To help leaders do this and better understand how workers view their workplace, Fort McCoy Garrison is conducting the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute Organizational Climate Survey starting Aug. 5

As a result of the feedback received from the 2018 command climate survey, a number of initiatives were started at Fort McCoy.

    • Workforce Advisory Work Group. The garrison commander directed the establishment of the Workforce Advisory Work Group to address systemic climate issues identified during the 2018 command climate assessment. The work group consists of junior to mid-level employees from the Fort McCoy workforce.

    • Employee Recognition and Award Program. Each month during the garrison commander’s staff meeting, employees are recognized and appreciated for their contributions, dedication, and commitment to the Fort McCoy community. All awardees are nominated by directors and staff leadership.

    • The Directorate of Human Resources’ Workforce Development Team has introduced a series of Lunch & Learn educational webinars and the Civilian Career Advancement Program. Upcoming webinars are scheduled for Sept. 11 (Assertiveness Skills for Women), Oct. 9 (Combating Apathy in the Workplace), and Dec. 12 (Developing a Leadership Presence). The Civilian Career Advancement Program offers resume writing assistance, career program training, mentorship, and more. For more information, call 608-388-5872.

    • The Garrison Information Management Office is sponsoring SharePoint 2016 for Site Administrators training Aug. 12-13 and Aug. 20-21.

    • Management-level leaders attended True Growth Academy, a leadership development program, from Aug. 6-7.

As in previous years, the survey is entirely voluntary, but widespread participation is appreciated and highly encouraged because it helps leaders get a more thorough picture of what workers think and how they feel about their organizations.

The survey focuses on three primary areas: organizational effectiveness, fair treatment, and sexual-assault prevention and response.

Anonymity is vital to the survey process, and a number of privacy protections have been put into place to ensure that people feel comfortable submitting honest and accurate responses, said Master Sgt. Cynthia Johnson, Equal Opportunity adviser for the garrison.

Civilian employees and military members will receive emailed invitations and passwords for the survey. The passwords are computer-generated, untraceable, and cannot be linked to individual personnel or their computers, either at work or home.

In order to generate a report for directorate or office, a minimum of 16 surveys must be completed. If fewer than 16 people for any directorate or office respond, those comments will be rolled up into the garrison commander’s overall report.

The survey will not display group data for directorate or offices if fewer than five people of any demographic group respond. For example: If you work in an office with 10 people (four women and six men), the survey will not display group data for the women since fewer than five women completed the survey. However, the responses for the four women will be included in the garrison commander’s overall report.

The survey also gives respondents the chance to provide written comments to leadership. Respondents should avoid including any identifying data within the written responses, including names, office names, or extremely specific information about scenarios that might lead to identification. Written responses are optional within the survey, as well. A respondent may elect to only answer the multiple-choice options or include written responses in only selected categories.

Demographic information is never linked to a single survey’s responses. The survey administrator cannot go into the results and find out what demographic information was submitted with a particular response.
The survey is designed to help the garrison commander and command group understand what is important to the community, what concerns community members have, and employees’ feelings about the work environment at Fort McCoy.

Any questions about the survey can be directed to the Equal Opportunity Office at 608-388-6335.
