When the Recycling Center here took over the contract in 2010, they’ve adopted a motto: reduce, reuse, recycle.
Not only has their motto reduced the amount of waste going into the landfill, but the Qualified Recycling Program brings money back to the base.
“The primary objective is to go as green as possible,” said Douglas Houle, 81st Logistics Readiness Squadron recycling technician. “We recycle cardboard, paper, metal, plastic, aluminum cans, copper and wood. It’s easier to say what we don’t recycle: Styrofoam and glass. I jokingly say ‘if it’s not screwed or nailed down, we’ll take it.’”
The center strives to make recycling as convenient as possible for the base populace.
“Our guys go around every day to different facilities and pick up their recycling every day,” said Charles Moore, 81st LRS QRP manager. “If people want to bring stuff from home they can. We have bins outside of the building where people can do drop offs.”
Houle has worked at the Recycling Center since 2011 and over the years he noticed the base has been more proactive about recycling.
“Recycling is important,” said Moore. “It prevents a lot of waste going into the landfill. For example, it takes plastic 30 years for it to degrade. If we find a source for it, we’re putting it back in the system by recycling and reusing.”
Last fiscal year the Recycling Center has made $126,000 and this year so far they have made $115,832. The money made from the QRP allows the center to upkeep the machines they use as well as be able to purchase recycling equipment for offices.
“If anyone wants to buy anything related to recycling, I can purchase it for them,” said Moore. “For example, if they need a shredder they can send me an email and I can purchase it.”
For those who want to drop off their recycling, the Recycling Center hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. or people have the option to use the recycling bins located outside building 4002 for 24 hour drop off.
