STEWART AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, N.Y. – Members of the 105th Airlift Wing attended a Reverse Speed Mentoring event designed to pair senior and junior Airmen together for professional development, August 3, 2019, at Stewart Air National Guard Base, Newburgh, New York.
Senior enlisted airmen and officers remained seated at several tables, while lower ranking enlisted and officers rotated through each group leading discussions on diversity, new Airmen interactions, feedback, acceptance an encouragement, physical fitness, expectations, and learning styles.
Master Sgt. Mario Gasperino, assigned to the 105th Maintenance Squadron, was one of the mentees.
“One of the takeaways from the event was encouraging fitness early in our Airmen’s careers to keep and maintain a ‘stay fit’ culture,” Gasperino said.
The groups rotated every seven minutes, flooded with information and conversation from Airmen who were motivated and prepared to speak with their leaders.
Staff Sgt. Giselle Gutierez, a 105th comptroller flight financial technician, was one of the mentors during the event.
“One of the biggest benefits of the day was that I felt heard,” Gutierez said. “There’s not always an opportunity to share your thoughts with the senior leaders, so this event was a good place to do that.”
During the fast and informative, one hour speed mentoring session, many topics were covered that were important the Airmen on the base. Future events will be held in order to provide more opportunities to 105th AW members to express themselves and be understood.
