Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC) has once again been recognized for its outstanding Health Promotions and Wellness program, receiving its fourth consecutive Navy Surgeon General's Health Promotion and Wellness Blue H award.

The annual award is presented to Navy and Marine Corps facilities excelling in the areas of nutrition, weight management, tobacco-free living and cessation programs, sexual health, fitness programs, alcohol abuse and injury prevention.

"The command receiving this award is a reflection of the collaboration of all of our programs working together to help our families; our staff achieve overall wellness," said Lt. Cmdr. Tsion Williams, NMTSC's Health Promotion and Wellness Coordinator. “The entire council works hard to raise awareness, to provide information to support our Sailors. Are they ready to do their job through safety observation, nutrition, fitness, emotional wellness, sleep? These are all things we are constantly and consistently focusing on.”

NMTSC’s Health and Wellness council is made up of staff members from the command’s Safety, Physical Readiness, Command Education and Training, Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, Religious Ministries, and Suicide Prevention program coordinators.

“I am extremely proud of Lt. Cmdr. Williams and her Health Promotions team,” said Capt. Maryann Mattonen, NMTSC’s commanding officer. “Receiving this award for the fourth consecutive time genuinely shows the command’s collective commitment towards living and promoting healthy life styles.”

The Blue H award is available at three levels of achievement: Bronze Anchor, Silver Eagle and Gold Star. Commands achieving 80 percent of the total points possible earn the Gold-level award. NMTSC will be recognized with its third Gold Star for the Surgeon General's Blue H award, making this the third consecutive year the command has been recognized at this level, and the fourth consecutive year being recognized since the start of its program.

“It’s not one person,” said Williams. “It’s our entire DAPA team, the SAPR VAs [Victim Advocates], our CFLs [command fitness leaders], the Safety team; we don’t take it for granted that we’ve received this recognition three years in a row. It shows us how well we can work together. It is a direct reflection of the actions of our team.”

NMTSC is the Navy component command providing administrative and operational control over Navy staff and students assigned to the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) and other medical programs in the San Antonio area.
