The Georgia Army National Guard’s Monroe-based 178th Military Police Company is currently in the country of Georgia conducting a joint interoperability training exercise with the Georgian Defense Force during exercise Agile Spirit 19 at the Vaziani Training Area, Georgia July 30, 2019.
Approximately 150 Georgia Guardsmen are training with GDF military police in tactics and techniques on the high steppes of the Caucasus mountain region.
“Working with the Georgians has been very beneficial to our unit,” said Sgt. Ryan R. Krohn, military policeman, 178th Military Police Company. “We share our tactics with them, and we’ve learned specific lessons from them as far as their tactics due to the terrain of the area.”
While together, the partnered units will conduct both small-arms training and mounted machine training to familiarize themselves with each other’s weapon systems and communication techniques to promote unit interoperability and the U.S./Georgian operational capacity and capabilities.
“It’s been a good experience working with the Georgians,” said Lt. Col. Copeland J. Rowell, battalion commander of the 170th Military Police Battalion. “In case of a real-world deployment, we will need translators; the communication lessons our platoon leaders and squad leaders are learning here will improve their readiness to work with a host nation in the future.”
The Georgia National Guard and the country of Georgia have partnered since 1994 under the National Guard State Partnership Program. The program established direct partnerships between Guard units of various states and foreign nations who have requested and been granted partnerships.
This year marks the Georgia National Guard’s 25th anniversary of the partnership with the country of Georgia.
“This is the first time the 178th Military Police Company had the opportunity to conduct an Overseas Duty Tour,” said Copeland. “The ability to conduct this training with Georgia during the 25th anniversary is an added bonus and an honor.”
