An aircrew operating a C-130H Hercules with the 136th Airlift Wing of the Texas Air National Guard at Fort Worth participated in training scenarios over South Post on July 16, 2019, at Fort McCoy, Wis.

The activity was part of the Patriot North 2019 exercise that took place at Volk Field and Fort McCoy.

More than 700 civilians, volunteers, and National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from more than 20 states supported the 2019 exercise.

According to the Air Force fact sheet for the C-130, the aircraft primarily performs the tactical portion of the airlift mission for the Air Force. The aircraft is capable of operating from rough, dirt strips like Young Air Assault Strip at Fort McCoy and is the prime transport for airdropping troops and equipment into hostile areas.

The C-130 operates throughout the U.S. Air Force, serving with Air Mobility Command, Air Force Special Operations Command, Air Combat Command, U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Pacific Air Forces, Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve Command, fulfilling a wide range of operational missions in both peace and war situations, the fact sheet states.

Basic and specialized versions of the aircraft airframe perform a diverse number of roles, including airlift support, Antarctic ice resupply, aeromedical missions, weather reconnaissance, aerial spray missions, firefighting duties for the U.S. Forest Service and natural disaster relief missions.

C-130 aircrews regularly train at Fort McCoy completing airdrop and exercise operations throughout the year.

Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin.

The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services each year since 1984.
