A C-5 Galaxy is scheduled to perform September 7-8th at the 2019 Grissom Air and Space Expo.
With a wing span of 222 feet, length of 247 feet and height of 65 feet, the C-5 is a strategic transport aircraft and is one of the largest aircrafts in the Air Force’s inventory.
Entering service in 1970, its primary mission is to transport cargo and personnel for the Department of Defense.
It can carry oversized cargo over intercontinental ranges and can take off and land on relatively short runways. Both the nose and aft doors open, allowing ground crews to concurrently load and off load cargo from both ends, decreasing cargo transfer times. The full-width drive-on ramps at each end enable double rows of vehicles to be transported.
With a cargo load of 281,001 pounds, the C-5 can fly 2,150 nautical miles, offload, and fly to a second base 500 nautical miles away from the original destination all without aerial refueling. With aerial refueling, the aircrafts range is limited only by aircrew endurance.
The C-5 Galaxy is just one of many attractions which will appear at the 2019 Grissom Air and Space Expo.
The 434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. The Citizen Airmen from the Hoosier Wing routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission.
