Soldiers from the 310th Human Resources Sustainment Command, Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, are training Soldiers from the 461st Human Resources Company, Decatur, Georgia and the 847th Human Resources Company, Ft. Snelling, Minnesota, during annual training, July 13 – August 2, Ft. Dix, New Jersey.
The training, Human Resources Warrior, is the first of its kind. The Soldiers are going through three sections of training - personal accountability, postal operations, and casualty operations - before completing a two-day field training exercise to wrap up their mission. The 310th was selected to lead the training after returning from a nine-month deployment to the Middle East in December.
Sgt. Howard Tindal, a postal supply sergeant with the 310th, is teaching a lesson on accepting domestic mail while at Ft. Dix. While the Human Resources Warrior Training will give Soldiers a taste of how handle mail, in order to be able to work at a Joint Military Mail Terminal overseas, a human resources specialist must go through Postal School in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina.
“The goal here is to give everybody a sense of how the postal service is conducted, the flow of mail, policies and procedures,” said Tindal.
“It has been valuable to learn how to set up an Army Post Office and how to set it up with minimal supplies. You won’t always have everything you need when you’re deployed so it’s important to learn how to improvise,” said Pfc. Dylan Scott, a Human Resource Specialist with the 461st HRC.
Scott said that receiving mail boosts the morale of Soldiers when deployed.
“Don’t have morale, don’t have motivated Soldiers,” Scott said. “You can get food, drinks, cigarettes over there, but it’s nothing like receiving mail from family and friends.”
Tindal, who has been deployed three times, knows better than most how important receiving mail is to morale.
“We have a very important job and a responsibility to the Soldiers to ensure that they receive their mail,” Tindall said. “After the Soldier himself, food, water, and shelter, mail is the most important thing. Before cell phones, that’s all we had: pen and ink.”
