REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (July 24, 2019) – A long-held relationship stands to be strengthened between the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center.
In June, NCDMM announced its newest facility opening in Huntsville, making it the fourth location for the organization alongside two facilities in Pennsylvania and one in Ohio.
“NCDMM’s decision to open an office in Huntsville was solely based on wanting to enable greater collaboration and develop a deeper strategic relationship with the U.S. Army by having an onsite presence to further support the execution of ongoing projects,” said Dr. Dean L. Bartles, NCDMM president and chief executive officer, in a press release on the company’s website.
NCDMM was established in 2003 as a congressional effort to provide defense work related to manufacturing and advanced machining. “Over the years, we’ve had a great relationship with them around those kind of topics,” said Jamie White, CCDC AvMC Engineering Directorate Aviation ManTech branch chief.
Having moved past the congressional intent, the organization has been self-sustaining for over 10 years. White explained that over the course of the 15-year relationship between CCDC AvMC and NCDMM several manufacturing projects have been completed, from small trade studies to multimillion dollar projects centric to manufacturing.
“Since our inception, the U.S. Army CCDC Aviation & Missile Center has been a key partner of NCDMM’s,” Bartles said in the press release. “During this time, we’ve partnered together on numerous projects that have resulted in significant cost savings/avoidance while improving parts, processes, and equipment used by the Warfighter.”
Because of its reach, NCDMM has the ability to connect the center with industry and academia, which encourages collaboration. “If we do a project and I need a specific machine tool, they can very likely put me in touch with that manufacturer,” White said.
“NCDMM has delivered innovative services and solutions that have positively impacted and supported the ManTech mission,” said Dr. Amy Lawrence, CCDC AvMC ED manufacturing science and technology division chief. “I look forward to our long-standing strategic partnership with NCDMM evolving to the next level with the opening of its Huntsville office.”
Mike Docherty, NCDMM director of manufacturing, will oversee the Huntsville office. “We support the Army and their efforts to transfer advanced manufacturing into the industrial base,” said Docherty in an interview with WAAY-TV in June. “What that does is allow the Army to more quickly transition things into the field, into the hands of the men and women to help them do their jobs better.”
