MECHANICSBURG, Pa. -- Five Navy Supply Corps Business/Enterprise Supply Chain Management (BEM) interns took part in a three-day workshop, July 16-18, at Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC) in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
The event served as an opportunity for interns to learn about the mission, functions, and tasks of NAVSUP BSC, and provided a platform to collaborate and share experiences learned from serving at different commands.
“The workshop allows BEM interns to meet with NAVSUP BSC leaders and program managers who support systems they will be using in the fleet,” said Capt. Douglas M. Bridges, Jr., commanding officer, NAVSUP BSC. “It also provides a chance for them to learn about NAVSUP BSC operations, and how we’re supporting Navy readiness, lethality, and the fleet warfighter.”
“Being able to talk directly with the experts who manage One Touch Support, Food Service Management, and Hazardous Inventory Control System for Windows will benefit me when I go back to sea,” said Lt. Tristan Skinner, BEM intern assigned to Naval Air Systems Command Headquarters in Patuxent River, Maryland. “These are some of the afloat systems that are essential to the logistics we will be responsible for.”
“I’ve worked for most of my career with the systems managed here and it’s great to see the behind-the-scenes efforts that are going on to modernize and maintain them. It’s eye-opening and I’m excited to see where these systems are going,” said Lt. Lukas Fenley, BEM intern at NAVSUP Weapons Systems Support (WSS) in Philadelphia.
During BEM internships, the officers manage projects at NAVSUP BSC, NAVSUP WSS, or NAVAIR, and receive formal education and accreditations in the management of information systems.
Following successful completion of the internship, Supply Corps officers earn the Logistics Information Technology (LOG IT) 1309S subspecialty code, identifying them as having significant experience in the BEM field.
Supply Corps officers interested in beginning a career in LOG IT through a BEM internship must submit their application 12 months prior to their next projected rotation date. Packages are screened in April and October of each year and notification of selections will be announced by Commander, NAVSUP, and Chief of Supply Corps.
