SIGONELLA, Sicily- Naval Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3) Sigonella welcomed its 31st commanding officer July 12.
During a change of command ceremony held aboard Naval Station Sigonella Capt. Marshall Monteville assumed command of the unit from Capt. Andrew Vaughn. Capt. Adam Armstrong, commander, Naval Medical Research Center, presided via VTC, with Navy Medicine West staff calling in too.
"I’m honored and humbled to take command of NAMRU-3 as I served at this command years ago," said Monteville. "While our headquarters has relocated to Naval Air Station Sigonella, we will still foster and develop partnerships to combat infectious disease across multiple regions to include CENTCOM, AFRICOM and EUCOM areas of responsibility."
Present at the ceremony were NAMRU-3 staff, Capt. William Todd, commanding officer, Naval Hospital Sigonella, his executive officer Capt. Walter Dalitsch, Command Master Chief Marvin Ramos, and Capt. Frank Okata commanding officer, Task Force 63 (CTF-63), headquartered in Naples, Italy.
NAMRU-3 Sigonella will function as a headquarters and administrative unit that dispatches teams to other countries to conduct research.
NAMRU-3’s mission is to study, monitor, and detect emerging and re-emerging disease threats of military and public health importance: develop mitigation strategies against these threats in partnership with host nations, and international and U.S. agencies in Central Command (CENTCOM), European Command (EUCOM), and Africa Command (AFRICOM) area of responsibility.
