USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74)

NORFOLK, Va. – Rear Adm. Fred I. Pyle, commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3 visited the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) to speak to the crew, July 18.
During his first visit to the aircraft carrier as commander, CSG-3, Pyle spoke about his priorities, addressing the wardroom, Chiefs Mess, and the ship as a whole in the hangar bay.
“One area I focus on a day-to-day, and long range, is safety,” said Pyle. “You’re going to see operational safety during the carrier qualifications. Safety is something that has to be in our DNA.”
He also discussed safety as the ship transitions into refueling complex overhaul (RCOH).
“My philosophy is nothing is worth injuring you or damaging equipment on the ship,” said Pyle.
During the all hands call, Pyle presented Sailor of the Quarter awards to Ship’s Serviceman Seaman Janae Lamar, Bluejacket of the Quarter; Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class Jada Jackson, Junior Sailor of the Quarter; Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Isabel Birchard, Sailor of the Quarter; and Navy Counselor 1st Class Christian Angton, Senior Sailor of the Quarter.

Stennis with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 and Destroyer Squadron 21 embarked, guided-missile destroyers USS Stockdale (DDG 106), USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and USS Spruance (DDG 111), and guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), and includes independent deployers: guided-missile destroyers USS Decatur (DDG 73) and USS Gridley (DDG 101).
CVW-9 consists of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 14, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 71, Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 117, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 133, and Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 14, 41, 97 and 151.
