FORT DRUM, N.Y. (July 17, 2019) -- Don’t get left out of the mud this year. This is the message that members of the Fort Drum Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers were delivering to community members July 15 at the Exchange.

They were encouraging people to sign up early for the annual Mountain Mudder on Aug. 9, where individuals or teams can register for one of four waves – 6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Staff Sgt. Jonathan Banister, Fort Drum BOSS president, said that those who register early not only guarantee which wave they will enter, but they also won’t incur the extra cost of race day entry.

Last year, the staff had to turn away nearly 100 people who wanted to register that morning because they had sold out the day before the event. Now, they’ve increased the number of tickets from 1,000 to 1,200.

“This is such a popular event because leaders can take their teams and squads through as a team-building experience,” Banister said. “It is also cheaper and has twice as many obstacles than most mud runs.”

The Mudder is a sprawling 6-mile course with more than 20 different obstacles – most of which are guaranteed to get participants either mud-soaked or water-drenched. The course starts at Monti Physical Fitness Center and ends at the Winner’s Circle.

Banister recommends that people wear comfortable clothing and footwear – knowing that some items may be hard to clean, or even recovered if it gets stuck in the muck.

“One obstacle in particular actually has about 100 pairs of shoes buried within the mud pit itself,” he said. “I would recommend that you wear clothing that you don’t mind either throwing away upon completion or don’t mind being stained from all of the mud. Also, make sure your shoes are tied tight if you want to finish with them still on your feet.”

Banister added that this is not a timed event, so individuals and teams are encouraged to negotiate the course at their own pace – fast or slow, it is all for fun.

Participants receive a T-shirt, finisher’s medal and access to the Mudder after party with food, beverages and live music from the 10th Mountain Division Band.

All Department of Defense cardholders, 18 or older, are invited to register for the Mountain Mudder at www.eventbrite.com. People can also register at the event, starting at 6 a.m., until tickets sell out.
