PHOENIX – Phoenix North Recruiting Company welcomed new company commander Capt. Will Handy, following a change of command ceremony at West Maricopa Education Center, July 16.

Handy replaced outgoing commander Capt. Denard Honeysuckle, who had been in command of Phoenix North since June 2017.

Overseeing the ceremony was Lt. Col. Scott Morley, commander, Phoenix Recruiting Battalion, who praised the company and its achievements during Honeysuckle’s tenure in command.

“Denard, over the past two years you have proven to be an exceptionally dedicated leader, your tireless work ethic evident for all to see,” Morley said. “You always strived to improve yourself and the company, making a difficult mission a reality, with countless hours and days spent ensuring your recruiters were taken care of.”

Morley talked about the volume of Soldiers enlisted by Honeysuckle’s company over the past two years, which saw a significant increase in 2018.

“During your two year tenure as commander, Phoenix North recruited a total of 514 Regular Army and Reserve Soldiers to strengthen the force,” Morley said. “That is a phenomenal achievement. You made massive strides over the last year, improving 25 percent with your total number of Future Soldiers enlisted.”

“You have worked tirelessly and selflessly during these last two years and the battalion will be forever indebted to your efforts in ensuring the battalion met its recruiting goals,” Morley concluded.

During his speech, Honeysuckle praised his recruiters for their combined efforts.

“Recruiting is often a thankless and difficult task that requires countless hours, research to emotionally connect with individuals who can be 15 years younger than you,” Honeysuckle said. “The hardest task isn’t the contract, but the conversation. What you have done on a daily basis is truly amazing.”

“Thank you for representing the battalion so proudly. It was an honor to work with every one of you,” Honeysuckle added.

Handy said he was appreciative for the chance to take the commander role and promised to continue the standard set by Honeysuckle.

“I am honored, humbled and excited to become your commander at this time,” Handy said. “The company is heading in the right direction and I look forward to the hard work ahead to achieve our mission.
