TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – “Today was special for our 22nd Airlift Squadron team,” said Tech. Sgt. Ryan Padgett, 22nd Airlift Squadron unit technician. “We were able to show and discuss our aircraft (C-5M Super Galaxy) mission.”

Approximately 110 students and 10 chaperons from the Salvation Army Kroc Center summer camp attended a tour July 11, at Travis Air Force Base, where they learned about the 22nd AS, 60th Security Forces Squadron Military Working Dog unit and met with Airmen to answer questions.

Events like this are designed to expand public knowledge and positive relationships with the community.

“There is a lot that happens on this base that no one ever sees,” Padgett said. “Many of these kids may not have an opportunity to come onto base besides during an air show and this can help humanize what we do. We really want to show our community, who support us, what we do and if we can invite them into our home once in a while, let’s do it.”

This was the first time for some of the students to step onto an aircraft, said Daniel Mendieta, Salvation Army Kroc Center summer camp counselor.

While on the C-5M static display, pilots, loadmasters and crew chiefs presented the 22nd’s history and heritage to the students.

“This could spark initial interests to want to know more about these planes and the work that goes into them getting into the sky,” Mendieta said.

The group then got insight of the SFS MWD unit.

“This particular demonstration was a little different than our normal demo,” said Staff Sgt. April Ray, 60th SFS MWD handler. “Normally, we do demonstrations for leadership to show our capabilities, but for this tour, (it had) more of a fun aspect. We showed these kids the importance of not touching working dogs because of what they are capable of.”

I hope this demo encouraged some of our young in the community and possibly created a spark in their brain that they can be whatever they want to be,” she added. “It was fun showing these students the ‘real’ side of K9.”

The tour concluded with lunch at the base’s Heritage Center followed by a question and answer session with Airmen.

“We are very happy Travis was able to host us today,” Mendieta said. “Our kids and our team got a lot of insight from this event. Now when we point at Travis’ largest aircraft, we know why they do what they do.”
